Melita, meaning "honey", is believed to be what the name "Malta" is derived from, the island of my fathers birth, which was famed throughout the mediteranean for it's amazing honey, which was flavoured by the wild thyme that grows across the island.
This is completely unrelated to the image except that there are a couple of bumble bees in it.
I've been wanting to paint a black skinned fairy for some time now. As someone who has grown up surrounded by almost exclusively caucasion people, I've been besotted by the seemingly increasing numbers of very dark skinned africans around Sydney. They are so beautiful! The colour of their skin, the forms of their face and bodies, so inspiring.
I don't think I quite captured the skin tones and facial structure I was after in this, but felt it was a decent first try.
Mostly acrylics except the background wash in watercolour.

This is a really beautiful draw. And I'm totally agree with you, african people have something really inspiring. Here I mostly see a haïtian or a mongrel fairy than an african, but it's very well done and the character is charming. I love her expression, very thoughfull.
